Tentative Title of PhD: Elasticity of Demand for Intoxicants in India.

Abstract: This study examines the elasticity of demand for intoxicants in India, focusing on alcoholic beverages and tobacco products. Utilizing NSSO Household Consumption Survey data, research indicates that these habitual goods exhibit relative price inelasticity, with moderate own-price elasticity for beer and foreign liquor (-0.17 -0.27). Grounded in optimal taxation theory, the findings suggest that while high tax rates generate revenue and address social externalities, their effectiveness in deterring consumption is limited by habitual demand, income growth, and informal substitutes. The study further explores consumption heterogeneity across demographic cohorts and regulatory frameworks.
