Tittle of Ph.D. topic: Inequality and Economic Well-being across Socio-religious Communities in India: A Multidimensional Approach

Abstract Inequality is multidimensional in nature. However, despite the availability of large datasets and feasible approaches to explore its dynamic nature, studies have focussed primarily on the income metric to assess inequality in well-being settings. Socio-economic vulnerability of individuals across life domains and interplay of individual and contextual factors among the social groups further complicate such narrow approach to the study of inequality. Therefore, to identify the multidimensional aspects of inequality and its interplay with the larger domain of human wellbeing, this study proposes to break new ground towards a nuanced understanding of inter and intra group inequalities in Indian settings using National Family Health Survey (NFHS) dataset. Gini (1912), Theil (1967) and other indices will be used to measure and decompose the inequality across socio-religious groups in India. Also, Logistic Regression, Ordered Logistic Regression and Multivariate Decomposition analysis will be used. This study therefore purposes to significantly contribute towards an understanding of the multidimensional construct of inequality particularly in context of socially disadvantaged populations.
