Tentative Title of PhD: India’s Participation in Global Value Chains: Fragmentation, Integration and Development Challenges.

Abstract: This study examines India’s participation in Global Value Chains (GVCs) and the role of production fragmentation in shaping trade and industrial development. It explains how production processes are distributed across countries based on comparative advantages such as technology, labour availability, and cost efficiency. The study analyses India’s position in GVCs using indicators including forward and backward participation, upstreamness, and downstreamness. It also compares India’s integration with East and Southeast Asian economies and reviews literature on fragmentation trade. The research identifies key constraints limiting India’s deeper integration into manufacturing-led GVCs and proposes policy measures to enhance competitiveness and export performance.
