Guide: Dr.Effat Yasmeen

Abstract: Empowerment of women brings equal status to women and equipping them to be economically independent and personally self reliant. Empowering women to participate fully in economic life across all sectors is essential to build stronger economies, achieve internationally agreed goals for development and sustainability, and improve the quality of life for women, men, families and communities. Among various measures targeted towards women empowerment, provision of microfinance assumes crucial importance across nations. Through microfinance and self help groups the poor women can rotate their funds to build economic capacities and capabilities. An attempt has been made in present study to examine the role of microfinance in economic empowerment of women in Jammu and Kashmir. The study is based on both primary and secondary data. Primary data has been collected from three districts of Kashmir Valley i.e. Anantnag from South Kashmir, Budgam from Central Kashmir and Baramulla from North Kashmir. Secondary data has been collected from various published and unpublished sources such as books, journals, magazines, annual credit plans of banks etc. Data has been analyzed by using various statistical tools Viz. Percentages, Simple Growth Rate, Garret Ranking Technique, T-test, ANOVA test, Correlation analysis, and Multiple Regression analysis.
