Established in 1966, our Department is one of the oldest in the University of Kashmir. The major objectives of our Department are to impart quality education to its students from all sections of the society, to conduct innovative and empirical research on various aspects of J&K economy, to provide policy inputs to the government and help in the economic development of the state and to supply skilled human resource to various organizations at national / state level.

M.A, M.Phil and Ph.D are the three academic programmes offered by our Department.

Admission to M. A. Programme is strictly based on entrance test.  M. A. Programme consists of four Semesters, with five courses in each semester. Present Syllabus consists of 26 courses including 18 core courses. Based on inputs from students, scholars and internal as well as external experts, four major revisions in syllabus have been made since 2000. The latest revision (2010) was incorporated mainly to boost the performance of our students in competitive examinations. Certain new Courses have also been introduced: These are Mathematics for Economics, J & K Economy, Research Methodology, Economics of Health and Education, and Project Work. We give top priority to our P.G Programme and there are five hours of class work per day for six days a week. Departmental Seminars/ Discussions are regular feature of our Academic Plan.

Admission to M. Phil Programme is strictly based on entrance test. M. Phil Programme consists of four components: Research Methodology, Subject Variation Paper, Dissertation and viva-voce. Double Evaluation system is strictly followed in case of Research Methodology and Subject Variation Papers. Like M.A. Programme there is regular class work on Research Methodology. Seminars/Presentations are prerequisite for submission of dissertations / theses. Open Viva-voce is in vogue in our department. The thrust area of research is Jammu and Kashmir Economy. Much of the research work has been concentrated on sectors like Agriculture and Allied activities, Handicrafts, Tourism, Social Sector, Poverty Alleviation Schemes and Human Development. For Ph. D. Programme it is a prerequisite for a candidate to clear M. Phil. with at least overall ‘B’ grade.

Hosting conferences, organizing Seminars, extension lectures and coaching programmes, conducting refresher courses and workshops are other integral components of our academic activities. These events have been the major source of attraction for eminent scholars like Prof. A. K. Sen., Late Prof. A. M. Khusro, Prof. K. N. Raj, Prof. G.S Bhalla, Prof. B.B. Bhattacharya, Prof. G. K Chadha, Prof. B. L. Mungekar, Prof. T. S. Papola, Prof. R. K. Sen and many more.

Our physical infrastructure has improved considerably over the recent past. The Department is connected with internet through LAN and Wi-Fi facilities. LCD and Overhead projectors are being regularly used in the classroom for various courses. Xerox facility is available for the students at concessional rates. Safe drinking water is available through water purifier. There are separate reading rooms for male and female research scholars, separate washrooms for boys and girls, and a common room for girl students with attached washroom. However, our Computer Lab is still small in size containing just 16 computers. We are in the process of augmenting the same.

Our seminar library is rich in terms of basic text books. Besides 7,000 titles of textbooks for all Compulsory and Optional Courses of M. A. Programme, there are 50 Reports and Surveys and one full section each on Jammu and Kashmir Economy and competitive examinations. The library subscribes leading National news papers and magazines like The Economic Times, The Hindu, Outlook, Yojna, Frontline and Mainstream. Updated Photo Gallery of all the Nobel laureates in Economics and Well Documented Leading Articles of Economic Times since 2000 are the other important features of our seminar library.

The popularity of our subject has increased exponentially during the last few years. While as 4 to 5 applicants were competing for one seat in our M.A Programme till 2007-08, there were more than 19 candidates applying for the same seat during 2012.

Repeated revisions in the syllabus, improvement in the availability of relevant text books, dedicated and sincere efforts of the faculty and above all discipline and hard work of our students have boosted the image of the subject and the department in the society. Four pass outs qualified NET/ SET during last three years. Another 04 students have qualified Kashmir Administrative Service Examination (KAS) during 2010-11. Eleven students were appointed as Assistant Directors, in various departments while as 63 Pass outs of the Department were appointed as Lecturers at 10+2 level during the last 3 years. Seven of our pass outs were appointed as Assistant Professors in the Higher Education Department of the State.

During the last few years, we have significantly reduced certain critical infrastructural constraints mainly through the judicious use of funds realized through self finance mode. We still need huge investment for up gradation and modernization of class rooms and the creation of a big sized computer lab for catering to the requirements of more than 200 P. G. students and research scholars of the department. However our real challenge is the small size of the faculty which has been the main constraint to our academic growth. Despite these limitations, it will be our endeavor to further improve our performance particularly in the area of competitive exams so that the visibility of our department both at the state and the national level enhances substantially.
